Po Walnym Zjezdzie - podziekowanie Prezesa PTA "Drogie Kolezanki i Koledzy, Czlonkowie Polskiego Towarzystwa Astronomicznego Pare miesiecy temu zwracalem sie do Was z prosba o udzial w planowanym we wrzesniu Krakowskim Zjezdzie Polskiego Towarzystwa Astronomicznego. Dzis pragne Wam podziekowac za liczny udzial. Dzieki Waszej obecnosci moglismy dokonac bardzo nam potrzebnych zmian w Statucie i innych wynikajacych z niego dokumentach formalno-prawnych. Ale przede wszystkim mielismy przyjemnosc spotkania sie w licznym gronie ludzi uprawiajacych astronomie. Wysluchalismy wspanialych referatow naukowych stanowiacych istotny przeglad "Astronomii u progu XXI wieku". Zrobiliscie Koledzy wspanialy Zjazd. Bylo nam u Was dobrze. Dziekujemy Wam bardzo. Wszystkie Kolezanki i Kolegow goraco pozdrawiam i zycze wszelkiej pomyslnosci. Do zobaczenia na kolejnym Zjezdzie w Toruniu w 2003 roku. Podziekowania od Amerykanskiego Towarzystwa Astronomicznego Odpowiedz na list z kondolencjami wyslany podczas Zjazdu PTA: Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the American Astronomical Society, I want to tell you how deeply we appreciate the concern of our colleagues in the Polish Astronomical Society. Your kind message will be circulated among our membership. The full impact of this horror is not yet calculable and probably cannot ever be calculated. We grieve for all the victims and their families without yet knowing the full toll. One of the joys of our discipline of astronomy has always been the close international friendships that it brings. Your sympathetic expression of this friendship is a light in a very dark time. Gratefully, Anneila Sargent, President, American Astronomical Society _______________________________________________________________________ 4. Uroczysta Sesja poswiecona pamieci prof. Andrzeja Zieby Uprzejmie informuje, ze Obserwatorium Astronomiczne UJ organizuje uroczyste spotkanie poswieconym sylwetce profesora Andrzeja Zieby. Spotkanie odbedzie sie w naszym Obserwatorium w dniu 12 pazdziernika br. (poczatek o godzinie 10:15). Profesor Andrzej Zieba byl dyrektorem naszego Obserwatorium w latach 70 ubieglego wieku. Wstepnie zaplanowalismy nastepujace 30-40 minutowe wyklady: prof. dr hab. Konrad Rudnicki "Wspomnienia o Andrzeju Ziebie" prof. dr hab. Andrzej Nowak "Gry rozniczkowe" dr Zbigniew Garncarek "Matematyczne metody badania rozmieszczenia" dr hab. Andrzej Woszczyna "Kosmologia" prof. dr hab. Michal Heller (tytul zostanie podany) W trakcie spotkania beda przerwy na kawe i prosty dowozony ze stolowki pracowniczej obiad. Poznym popoludniem planujemy uroczysta kolacje w centrum Krakowa. Osoby, ktore chcialy by wziac udzial w tym spotkaniu prosimy o zgloszenie sie poczta elektroniczna. W imieniu Komitetu Organizacyjnego, Michal Ostrowski Dyrektor Obserwatorium Astronomiczne UJ (e-mail: mio@oa.uj.edu.pl) _______________________________________________________________________ 5. Mozliwosc przylaczenia sie do projektu OPTICON W/g informacji przekazanej przez prof. Michala Rozyczke dr John Davies z Edynburga, ktory jest jednym z administratorow ogolnoeuropejskiego programu OPTICON majacego na celu m.in. lepsze wykorzystanie teleskopow wyrazil opinie, ze "wspolparca z takimi krajami jak nasz jest mile widziana". Adres strony tego programu to: http://www.astro-opticon.org/ Poczatkowy fragment opisu projektu z powyzszej witryny: OPTICON, the EU Optical Infrared Coordination Network for Astronomy, is an EU funded ``Infrastructure Cooperation Network'', bringing together Europe's multinational, national and major regional providers of astronomical infrastructures, together with a few research institutes from the larger countries. OPTICON is supported to identify common challenges of interest to optical-infrared astronomers which require collaboration across Europe OPTICON sponsors open working groups to develop specific proposals to address these issues, including proposals for new EU funding. _______________________________________________________________________ 6. Wiadomosci naukowe Deep Space 1 returns stunning images of comet (Sptember 25, 2001) Stunning close-ups of a comet's core were released Tuesday by NASA scientists who, along with other experts, called the images the best ever taken of a comet. In one of the closest photographs, the comet Borrelly appears like an eerie cosmic potato. In others, mysterious jets of gas and dust are seen shooting out from the comet in an unexpected direction. All over, the surface of the oblong object, roughly the size of Mt. Everest, is revealed as rolling, pitted terrain marked by grand mesas. No one involved in comet science or the mission that yielded the images expected such variety on the surface of a frozen hunk of ice. The images are the bonus product of the Deep Space 1 mission, which was not designed primarily to do science. http://www.spaceflightnow.com/news/n0109/25ds1flyby/ ___________ Chandra exposes the knotty problem of M87 jet (September 27, 2001) NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has given astronomers their most detailed look to date at the X-ray jet blasting out of the nucleus of M87, a giant elliptical galaxy 50 million light years away. The image of the jet reveals an irregular, knotty structure. A team of astronomers led by Herman Marshall of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge used to observe M87 for 10.6 hours on July 17-18, 2000. According to Marshall, one of the remarkable findings of the investigation is that the knots near the core are much brighter in X-rays than the farthest knots, relative to the optical and radio bands. While the exact reason for this dimming is unknown, it is likely to be related to the slowing of the jet, which was discovered using the Hubble. http://www.spaceflightnow.com/news/n0109/27chandra/ ___________ Quantum Teleportation (26 September 2001) LONDON (Reuters) - Physicists in Denmark have made two samples of trillions of atoms interact at a distance in an experiment which may bring Star Trek-style teleportation and rapid quantum computing closer to reality. Eugene Polzik and his colleagues at the University of Aarhus are not about to beam anyone up to the Starship Enterprise, but their research reported in the science journal Nature on Wednesday makes the idea of instantly transporting an object from one place to another less far fetched. It involves quantum entanglement -- a mysterious concept of entwining two or more particles without physical contact. Albert Einstein once described it as ``spooky action at a distance.'' Entangled states are needed for quantum computing and teleportation. Scientists have entangled states of a few atoms in earlier experiments but Polzik and his team have done it with very large numbers and using laser light. http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/technology/quantum_teleportation _010926.html ____________ Fred Hoyle, astronomer, cosmologist and author (1915 - 2001) 23-Aug-2001 Professor Sir Fred Hoyle, astronomer, cosmologist and science author has died at the age of 86. Although best known as a supporter of the Steady State theory of the Universe, and a determined opponent of the commonly accepted Big Bang theory, Hoyle also received international acclaim for his original work on stars, galaxies, gravity and the origin of atoms. http://www.cf.ac.uk/maths/wickramasinghe/hoyle.html ______________________________________________________________ koniec ___
