abstrakt:
CUBES is a new spectrograph that will be installed at the Very Large Telescope of ESO and that is currently in the final design phase. CUBES will be able to cover with high efficiency the ground-based near-UV spectral region (300-400 nm) in two resolution modes (R = 6000 and 20 000). The instrument is being built by a consortium of institutes from Brazil, Germany, Italy, Poland, and the UK. In this talk, I will present the current instrument design and its capabilities.
I will also summarise the main science cases driving the instrument development in the fields of Galactic, extra-galactic, and solar system astrophysics.
